Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) 2023 is a day dedicated to honoring and remembering transgender individuals who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence and discrimination. It serves as a solemn occasion to raise awareness about the challenges faced by transgender people and advocate for a more inclusive and accepting society.
Global Transgender Violence

Three hundred twenty trans and gender-diverse people were killed world-wide this year, says a new report. The Trans Murder Monitoring report tracks murders reported in the media each year, this year’s report includes deaths between Oct 1 2022 and September 30 2023. The vast majority of those killed (94%) were trans women or trans-feminine people. Most were Black, and many were sex workers too. 80% of those killed were of trans people affected by racism, an increase of 15% from last year. Many of the victims were young. The age group with the most victims was 19 to 25 years old. Overall, those between 19 and 40 years old made up three-quarters (77%) of those reported killed.
Transgender Violence in America
Sadly, 2022 saw at least 41 transgender and gender non-conforming people fatally shot or killed by other violent means. We say “at least” because too often these stories go unreported — or misreported. In previous years, the majority of these people were Black and Latinx transgender women. (Human Rights Campaign)

Effective Strategies for Working with Gender Expansive Individuals: Cultural Humility- A Framework for Creating Trans Inclusive Spaces. 11/21/2023 – 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM Pacific Time; Virtual
Description: Join us for the People+Purpose+Power’s (P3) webinar on Effective Strategies for Working with Gender Expansive Individuals: Cultural Humility- A Framework for Creating Trans Inclusive Spaces in collaboration with the Las Vegas TGA PART A HIV/AIDS Program and Collaborative Research. Research demonstrates that gender-affirming care improves the mental health and overall well-being of gender diverse patients. Because gender-affirming care encompasses many facets of healthcare needs and support, it has been shown to increase positive outcomes for transgender and nonbinary people. Gender-affirming care is patient-centered and treats individuals holistically, aligning their outward, physical traits with their gender identity. A safe and affirming healthcare environment is critical in fostering better outcomes for transgender, nonbinary, and other gender expansive people.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the social-cultural context of trans lives and its impact on the health and well-being of trans and gender expansive people
- Identify barriers to care unique to trans and gender expansive people
- Summarize strategies that address the structural and cultural barriers impacting access to care among trans and expansive people
- Examine best practices to provide culturally responsive care for trans and gender expansive people

Transphobic discrimination (transphobia)
occurs when transgender people face stigma and oppression directed toward them. Findings from CDC’s National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) report show that most transgender women have experienced some form of abuse or harassment because of their gender identity or presentation. This may negatively impact accessing testing, care, or getting treatment for HIV.
