In collaboration with NAHEWD, the Midwest AETC – Kansas/Nebraska is hosting a two-part webinar series titled The Intersection of Two Epidemics: HIV and Substance Use Disorders in Rural Communities. Presented by Kellene Eagen, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, the webinars will highlight innovative models and approaches to treating substance use disorder (SUD) in people with HIV living in rural communities.

Part 1

Objectives:

  • Explain current epidemiology of HIV and substance use disorders (SUD) with a focus on rural populations. 
  • Outline the bi-directional interactions between HIV and SUDs. 
  • Understand why language matters when talking about people who use drugs and people living with HIV/AIDS to minimize stigma associated with these chronic conditions. 
  • Identify common screening tools to identify patients at risk for substance use disorders.
Part 2 

Wednesday, September 28, 2022

1:00 – 2:00pm CST

Objectives:

  • Define levels of care for SUD treatment. 
  • Review pharmacotherapy approved for treatment of SUDs including outcomes, regulatory considerations and clinical pearls. 
  • Understand barriers to accessing SUD treatment for PLWHA living in rural communities. 
  • Identify educational resources available to providers to learn more about caring for individuals with SUDs.
