Combatting the Surge in HIV Cases in Arizona: DISH-AZ Stands Ready

Posted March 1, 2024

The 2023 Annual Report on HIV Surveillance in Arizona highlights significant updates and statistics regarding HIV incidence, testing, and care in the state. It notes a concerning 20% increase in new HIV cases from 2022, attributed in part to reduced testing during COVID-19 lockdowns. However, the report also underscores the positive impact of Arizona’s HIV linkage to care systems, with 79% of newly diagnosed individuals connected to services within 30 days. Key demographic insights reveal disparities in outcomes, with men assigned male at birth and men who have sex with men (MSM) being disproportionately affected groups. The Hispanic population accounted for the highest number of new cases in 2022. Despite challenges, improvements in care are evident, particularly among the American Indian/Alaskan Native population, showcasing high treatment adherence rates across all stages of the HIV continuum of care.
