Posted September 12, 2024

National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day - September 18Observed on September 18th, National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day draws attention to older adults living with HIV. As the population of older individuals with HIV continues to grow, it becomes increasingly important to address their unique needs in prevention, care, and treatment.

Addressing the unique challenges faced by older adults living with HIV is possible for healthcare providers. These challenges often intersect with the normal aging process, creating complex health issues. As people age, they naturally become more susceptible to chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. For those living with HIV, these risks can be amplified. Additionally, older adults with HIV may face compounded stigma—not only from living with HIV but also due to ageism—which can negatively impact mental and physical health.

The psychological impact of living with HIV for many years, coupled with the challenges of aging, can lead to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. Furthermore, older adults with HIV may experience difficulties accessing appropriate healthcare due to age-related mobility issues, limited income, and a lack of specialized healthcare services.

Raising awareness about the unique needs of older adults with HIV is essential for healthcare providers. Providers need to promote access to HIV testing and treatment for older adults. By staying informed and proactive, providers can significantly impact the well-being of the older population, ensuring that those with HIV receive the care and support they deserve.
