Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE)
Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America is the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) initiative to address the ongoing public health crisis of HIV in the US. The initiative sets the goal to the number of incident infections in the US by 75% within the first 5 years (by 2025), and by 90% within 10 years (by 2030). This initiative will leverage critical scientific advances in HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care by coordinating the highly successful programs, resources, and infrastructure of the CDC, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Indian Health Service (IHS). Efforts initially will be focused on ‘hotspots’ in the US where more than 50% of HIV diagnoses occurred in 2016-17, and includes 48 counties, 7 states, Washington, DC and San Juan, PR.
To reach these levels, The EHE plan consists of 4 pillars of action: Diagnose, Treat, Prevent, and Respond.
At the Pacific AETC, we work across all four pillars of Ending the Epidemic. The Pacific Region (HRSA Region 9) includes 10 of the 48 counties identified as ‘hotspots’ by the EHE initiative. In March 2020, the Pacific AETC received HRSA funding to support our efforts towards this initiative. We will be expanding the ways we work with impacted communities to have a greater effect on populations hardly reached by traditional HIV providers and clinic settings. PAETC will take a social justice approach to addressing the social determinants of health to improve systems of care. Our work in this initiative has just begun, so return here for updated information about the Pacific AETC’s efforts to end the epidemic.
