This event aims to engage Black Communities in discussions about HIV, providing key insights into current HIV cure research. It empowers community members to enhance their understanding and actively participate in advocating for HIV cure-related research.

Bridging Black Communities and Research will feature a brief HIV Cure 101 talk from Ebony Gordon, Program Coordinator of SF AIDS Foundation’s program Healing & Uniting Every Sista, and HOPE’s Community Partner. Following the HIV Cure 101, Miss Gordon will introduce panelists to have a moderated discussion and audience Q&A regarding what considerations are important as HIV strategies are developed with from a lens that is culturally appropriate and responsive to Black communities. This panel will feature Black community members with lived HIV experience and HIV Cure Science researchers who work alongside HOPE for HIV Cure.

First observed on February 7, 1999, National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day aims to acknowledge how HIV disproportionately affects Black communities.

Black communities have made great progress in reducing HIV. Yet racism, discrimination, and mistrust in the health care system may affect whether Black people seek or receive HIV prevention services. These issues may also reduce the likelihood of engaging in HIV treatment and care. NBHAAD is an opportunity to increase HIV education, testing, community involvement, and treatment among Black communities.

HIV Cure 101 – Bridging Black Communities and Research will be held in a hybrid-format and food will be provided for those joining us in-person. For community members who are communing with us virtually, Google Meet details are listed above.

San Francisco AIDS Foundation promotes health, wellness, and social justice for communities most impacted by HIV, through sexual health and substance use services, advocacy, and community partnerships.

HOPE for HIV Cure‘s mission is to find a cure for HIV using a novel “block-lock-excise” approach—which entails the long-term durable silencing of viral expression towards permanent excision of the latent provirus—leading to the control of the virus in the absence of therapy. And to engage the community to increase HIV cure awareness around the “block-lock-excise” approach and understand community concerns around HIV cure strategies.
