New Strategy to Access TPOXX: Enrolling patients with MPox in the STOMP clinical trial (CDPH)

Posted September 28, 2023

From the CDPH STD Control Branch:

Please see the following information and tools about enrolling patients in the STOMP clinical trial, the NIAID-funded clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of oral tecovirimat (TPOXX).

Please share and distribute the below information with your provider network(s), along with the patient and provider one-page resources below, which were developed in partnership with California Prevention Training Center (CAPTC) to aid in clinician and patient participation in STOMP access.

As of June 2023, the preferred strategy for clinicians and local health jurisdictions to access oral TPOXX is STOMP. Enrolling in STOMP is easy and a critical step for determining TPOXX efficacy against mpox, allowing FDA approval and commercial availability.

A patient does not need to have severe mpox disease or high risk of severe illness to enroll in STOMP. Both in-person sites and 100% remote (via telehealth visits) enrollment options are available. Interested participants can contact one of the clinical research sites through https://www.stomptpoxx.org/ or by calling the “Mpox Study Hotline” at 1-855-876-9997.

Participants will be offered incentives for participation and will be clinically monitored throughout their illness. If a participant received placebo, but progresses to severe disease, they will be offered TPOXX. More information about the study and enrolling patients can be found here.

The patient and provider one-page resources can be accessed at the CAPTC resource page: https://californiaptc.com/resources/ (“STOMP: Study of Tecovirimat for Mpox, A guide for Providers” and “A guide for patients”) and at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Mpox Healthcare Providers Guidance webpage, under ‘Management’: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Mpox/Mpox-Guidance.aspx#health-care-providers.

Patients who do not qualify or decline enrollment in STOMP, can still receive the medication through state supplies. Please let us know if there are any questions! Thank you for your continued partnership and dedication.

Please contact CDPH STD Control Branch at STDCB@cdph.ca.gov with any questions.
