San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area has been an epicenter of HIV/AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic and, therefore, boasts a rich history in cutting edge HIV research, care, treatment, and prevention. Most faculty are affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco and are practicing clinicians in jails, community health centers, hospital clinics and substance abuse treatment facilities, providing training tailored to these care settings. The San Francisco & the North Coast Area AIDS Education and Training Center (SF & NCA AETC) offers a variety of trainings and professional development activities, including mentoring and clinical preceptorships, focusing on clinical management of HIV/AIDS and related major co-morbidities (e.g., Hepatitis C). Special programs target pharmacists, nurses and new physicians. Programs utilize cutting edge, interactive training methodologies, designed to give busy clinicians the most current information they need to provide quality HIV care to patients and their families. .
