The Charles R. Drew University AIDS Education and Training Center (CDU AETC) provides health care professionals in the highly affected south central region of Los Angeles with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for patients infected with HIV in underserved and vulnerable populations. CDU PAETC faculty trainers possess particular expertise in substance abuse and mental health disorders that co-occur with HIV. As a result, many trainings focus on the interplay between these dynamic forces. CDU has developed training curricula on issues including: HIV and Alcohol, Methamphetamine and HIV, Medical Marijuana, Prescription Opioids 101and Crack Cocaine and HIV. Hands on clinical preceptorships are offered in busy, urban HIV medical clinics serving primarily minorities, tailored to individuals’ needs, as well as clinical consultations and technical assistance on such topics as service system delivery, engagement in care and implementing routine opt-out testing.
